GUT FEELING – THE SECRET POWER CENTRE IN YOUR BELLY

Did you know that just below your belly button is a vital energy centre considered to be the body’s physical and spiritual centre of gravity!

By shifting the focus of thinking from your mind to this lower energy centre, you can achieve a more grounded and centred state of being. This shift helps in quietening the mind, reducing anxiety, and promoting a sense of calm and presence.

Known as the ‘Lower Dantian’, or ‘Hara’ in Japanese, it is located approximately three finger widths below and two finger widths behind the belly button.

I use this a lot with my life coaching clients who find that shifting the area where they perceive their thoughts originate, from the head to the belly, makes it easier to enter a state of mindfulness and inner peace in a meditation, NLP or hypnotherapy session.

Historically, the Lower Dantian has been recognised in traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts and Qigong for thousands of years. It is believed to be the source of qi, the body’s vital energy, and is essential for maintaining balance, vitality, and overall well-being. In Japanese culture, the concept of Hara encompasses not just physical balance but also emotional and mental stability, symbolising a person’s true self and inner strength.

In essence, the Lower Dantian serves as a powerful tool for transforming mental processes and enhancing overall mental health. By anchoring thought and awareness in this energy centre, individuals can cultivate a more balanced, centred, and resilient approach to life’s challenges.

Buddhist and Taoist teachers often instruct their students to focus on the Dantian because it centres awareness in the greater mind of the universe, eventually activating higher states of consciousness.

Masters of Japanese arts such as tea ceremony, swordsmanship, and martial arts are said to be “acting from the Hara” – “Hara” being Japanese for “belly”.

HOW TO SHIFT YOUR THINKING TO THE LOWER DANTIAN

See if this lowers your anxiety…

  • Close your eyes, put feet flat on floor.
  • Think of something that annoys you. On a scale 1 – 10 – something around 7 or 8.
  • Take your awareness of this anxiety down through body.
  • Think about your awareness as the place where you think from. Drop it down inside your body, down, down, down to about two inches below the belly button – the Lower Dantian.
  • Take your awareness all the way down, until it settles there.
  • Imagine a spot of white light – exactly at that point that goes all the way down to the floor and then deeper and deeper and deeper.
  • Keep and hold your awareness at the Lower Dantian.
  • Notice how you feel about your anxiety now on a scale of 1 – 10?
