GOAL SETTING TO THE NOW

I listened to an interview with Lululemon founder Chip Wilson on the Tim Ferris podcast where he said: ‘When setting goals, set them in date order, with the furthest away first and work back to today, or now goals’.

It’s easier to set goals for today if you have goals for the week. It’s easier to set goals for the week if you have goals for the month. It’s easier to set goals for the month if you have goals for the year. It’s easier to set a one-year goal if you have a five-year goal, and so on.

So, if my one-year goal was to have spent the last year alcohol-free, the setting of daily goals was easy. Goal 1 – every day, do not drink alcohol today.

If your goal is a someday goal, you should start at the top and work back. If it’s a one-year goal, start there and work back. You want to take your goal and work back until you have your today goal.

Take the example of when I wrote my book “Walking Back To Happiness: the Secret To Alcohol-free Living & Well-being”. A year before I published the book my goal setting and timing around the book would have been as follows:

One year – publish the book

Nine months – complete writing of manuscript for editing and production

Six months – complete 50% of writing of manuscript

One month – have structure and content planned

One week – plan outline content

Today – research alcohol-free book sector

Bill Gates said: “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”

One-Year Goal Based on your five-year goal, what’s the one thing you can do this year?
Monthly Goal Based on your one-year goal, what’s the one thing you can do this month?
Weekly Goal Based on your one-month goal, what’s the one thing you can do this week?
Daily Goal Based on your one-week goal, what’s the one thing you can do today?
Right Now Goal Based on your daily (today) goal, what’s the one thing you can do right now?
