FORGIVENESS IS A GIFT YOU GIVE YOURSELF

A powerful story illustrating the impact of forgiveness is that of two ex-prisoners of war who met many years after their release. One asked the other, “Have you forgiven your captors yet?” The second man replied, “No, never.” To this, the first responded, “Then they still have you in prison, don’t they?”

This metaphor reveals a profound truth: when we hold onto anger and refuse to forgive, it is we who remain trapped. Just like the prisoners, by clinging to resentment, we keep ourselves shackled to the pain and suffering of the past.

Forgiveness is a powerful key to unlocking your emotional freedom. For me, forgiveness does not mean excusing, condoning or forgetting the wrongs done to us; rather, it is about freeing ourselves from the emotional burden of past pain.

Forgiveness is letting go of the hope for a different past and allowing space for healing and growth in the present.

By forgiving we break the emotional chains, allowing us to reclaim our peace. It means making a conscious choice to release the grip that anger holds on our hearts. The benefits of forgiveness are immense.

  • Emotionally, it helps reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression. It fosters compassion and brings a sense of peace.
  • Physically, it can lower blood pressure and improve overall health.
  • Spiritually, it opens the heart, freeing us to live more fully and connect with our authentic selves. It liberates us from the past, allowing us to focus on the present and future with renewed energy and positivity.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

In my coaching practice I help clients see forgiveness as an essential aspect of emotional and spiritual well-being. Here are three practical tips to help you begin the process of forgiveness:

  1. Acknowledge your feelings: Take time to reflect on the hurt and anger you feel. Journaling can be a powerful tool to help you explore and understand the emotions tied to the situation.
  2. Empathise with the other person: While challenging, try to see the situation from the perspective of the person who wronged you. Recognising that their actions may have been driven by their own pain can help shift your perspective.
  3. Let go of expectations: Forgiveness doesn’t depend on receiving an apology or having closure. It’s an inner process focused on your healing and emotional freedom.

Forgiveness is not something that happens overnight. It is a journey, but each step brings you closer to releasing the weight of the past and embracing a more peaceful, liberated future.
