CHANGE THE PROGRAMS THAT ARE RUNNING YOUR MIND

Almost everything we do is controlled by programs that run in our unconscious mind.

Think of it as being like computer software.

The way we brush our teeth, the way we take a shower, the way we go to sleep, as well as the things we do such as a program to drink alcohol, a program to eat cakes, a program to eat meat.

We learn these programs – so therefore they can be unlearned and replaced with new programs.

I discovered all this when I studied to become an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) practitioner.

THE SCIENCE – DISCIPLINE WEIGHS OUNCES AND REGRET WEIGHS TONNES

Once we learn something new that we believe is good for us and we do it enough times it will become engraved in our unconscious mind.

If you want to live a fit and healthy life you need to do fit and healthy things. Once you believe ‘going for a run’, for example, is good for you and you’ve done it a few times the program ‘go for a run’ will start to build in your unconscious mind. If you do it enough times it becomes the norm.

I’ll give you another example, I’ve done 100 press ups / push ups a day  over 18 months. I spread them throughout the day in groups of 20 or 30. So 30 when I wake up, 30 at lunch time, 20 mid-afternoon and 20 in the evening. That’s over 55,000 in total, over 18 months!

In the first month or two, this was a conscious effort and needed a lot of discipline. After a month, because I’d done it so many times, it became one of my unconscious mind programs and a normal activity to do. So fast forward to this January I’ve done 3,100 press ups, and to be perfectly honest I’m not even aware that I’m doing this 80% of the time because I’ve programmed myself to do it.

The flipside of this is we can program ourselves to repeat bad habits, which we believe are good for us. So drinking alcohol, for example, is perceived by many to be good because there is an initial ‘high’ feeling from the first consumption. Our conscious mind tells our unconscious mind that this is good, but the reality is the more you drink the worse it becomes and your body starts to shut down, but your mind is only engraved with the initial high feeling.

It’s your unconscious mind that believes alcohol is good for you, and that’s why many continue the habit. To stop this program running you need to talk to your unconscious mind and convince it that this habit is bad for you. Once that happens, and you start to not drink alcohol it will, overtime this will become your new norm and your new program will be alcohol-free.

One of the keys to success is the discipline needed to stop bad habits and build new ones. I love the saying “Discipline weighs ounces. Regret weighs tonnes.” So keep going in the early days, build a new program and live your best life.
