ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE – RESET YOUR REALITY

Your brain is always looking for evidence for what you’ve told it. So if the story in your mind is “Things are always bad and never working out for me”, your brain is going to cherry pick everything in your life that reinforces that.

This is because we unconsciously filter out information that contradicts our beliefs.

That is why if you start saying “Show me how things can get better – it can get better than this”, then they do. Your brain is going to start to look for evidence that this is true. This is what psychologists call the confirmation bias – your brain will start to select the things that are good. It’s just trying to prove the reality you have created for yourself.

So be intentional about the reality you are creating. If you look on the bright side of life – life will be happier.

HOW CONFIRMATION BIAS WORKS

Selective Exposure: People tend to seek out information or sources that align with their views. For example,  a person who believes in a specific diet may only read studies supporting its benefits.

Selective Interpretation: Information is interpreted in a way that reinforces existing beliefs. For example, ambiguous evidence is skewed to support a preferred conclusion. A glass of red wine a day is good for my health is a classic example of this.

Selective Recall: People are more likely to remember details that support their opinions and forget contradictory evidence. For example, remembering only the good times and ignoring or playing down the bad.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

  1. Actively Seek Contradictory Information: Look for evidence that challenges your beliefs.
  2. Engage with Diverse Perspectives: Listen to opposing viewpoints and try to understand their rationale.
  3. Ask Critical Questions: Analyse the evidence and question whether it supports your belief or if you’re interpreting it selectively.
  4. Use Objective Measures: Rely on data, statistics, research rather than anecdotal evidence.
  5. Practice Mindfulness: Be aware of your own biases and intentionally pause to evaluate them.
