THE BOOK THAT CHANGED MY LIFE IS THE ONE I WROTE

That might sound like an odd thing to say on World Book Day, when most of us are usually talking about the books that shaped us, challenged us or arrived at exactly the right moment in life.

But in my case it is true.

Writing Walking Back to Happiness – The Secret to Alcohol-Free Living & Well-Being forced me to confront the truth about how I had been living.

And the story behind the book did not begin with writing. It began with a habit.

For years alcohol was simply part of life. Social. Normal. Expected. Like many people, I never really questioned it. It was just what people did. But slowly I began to notice something uncomfortable. Alcohol was taking more than it was giving. Energy, focus, sleep and clarity were all being quietly chipped away.

At some point the equation flipped. What had once felt like relaxation started to feel like limitation. That was the moment things began to change.

When I stopped drinking something interesting happened. I suddenly had far more energy than I was used to. Not a little more, but a lot more. So I started walking.

Every morning before breakfast I walked 15,000 steps, roughly nine kilometres, and I finished those walks before 9am. At first it was simply exercise and fresh air. It was also thinking time. But over time those walks became something much bigger than that.

They became a daily reset.

Walking early in the morning gave me space to think clearly again. Ideas surfaced, problems untangled themselves and life began to feel simpler. Those walks eventually became the foundation of what I now call the 9KM BY 9AM approach, which is simply about moving your body, clearing your mind and starting the day with intention.

Somewhere along that journey I decided to write a book about it.

Walking Back to Happiness is not a memoir. It is a practical guide to changing habits and taking control of your life. The central idea is simple. Sobriety delivers what alcohol promises. When people stop drinking they often discover better sleep, more energy, clearer thinking and a surprising sense of freedom that they did not expect.

Today I work with people as a life coach, NLP practitioner and hypnotherapist, helping them change habits, overcome anxiety and build healthier lifestyles. But if I am honest, the foundation of that work started with one simple decision to stop drinking, start walking and keep going.

Books are powerful things. Some entertain us, some educate us and occasionally one changes the direction of your life.

On World Book Day it is worth asking yourself a simple question. Which book changed yours?

Sometimes the answer might surprise you. Sometimes it is the one you write yourself!

PS: If you know someone who has been thinking about changing their relationship with alcohol, feel free to share this with them.
