WHAT IS HAPPINESS?

My book Walking Back To Happiness: The Secret To Alcohol-free Living & Well-being is about how I became happy again, a feeling I had not had on an on-going basis since I was a child.

Four and half years ago, aged 54 I decided to change my life. My journey is a story of how a 50-something-year-old, who had been locked into the habit of drinking alcohol, poor eating and not doing enough exercise all his adult life, finally woke up and said, ‘I want a different life’; it’s about how I found my purpose and in doing so, transformed my mind and body; how I lost 30% of my body weight and made anxiety and sleepless nights a thing of the past.

At the heart of my story is how I found happiness. My quest to answer, “What is happiness?” and “Where do you find it?” became a journey of discovery and enlightenment.

I learned that happiness was not an outcome, or a destination, it was in fact the journey itself, or the way I live my life. Through following my purpose, living in the present moment, having an optimistic view, and developing strong open relationships with people I love, I found what I was looking for. And where did I find it? It was both inside me and all around me. Just sitting there waiting to be found.

I just needed to make the connection and let it flow through me. Finding happiness in the way I live my life is the secret to well-being. Happiness is truly just a mindset. It resides all around us and inside all of us. You just have to let it in.

SOME SCIENCE

Positive Psychology, says happiness or well-being, is akin to flourishing. They say there are five building blocks that enable flourishing known as PERMA: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment.

And there are techniques to increase each. Different people will derive happiness or well-being from each of these five blocks to varying degrees.

A good life for one person is not necessarily a good life for another. There are many different routes to a flourishing life. Here is a brief definition of each of the five building blocks:

  • Positive Emotion. The moments when you laugh and feel joy are beautiful but are just one element of happiness or well-being. Happiness is not all about the positive emotions of laughter or buying something new. Many of us are chasing the wrong things in search of happiness. New clothes, houses, cars, material items produce momentary bursts of happiness only.
  • Engagement. This is when you are totally absorbed in what you are doing. You are ‘in the zone’. You are fully engaged in the activity with your mind and body. Sport, ballet, painting, studying and lots of our hobbies can produce these feelings. Wherever you find engagement, you can find more happiness.
  • Relationships. Cultivating positive relationships with friends and family leads to more happiness.
  • Meaning. This is like the engine driving happiness. Believing in a cause, or something bigger than oneself, can produce deep meaning and happiness.
  • Accomplishment. We are designed to accomplish things even for their own sake. We don’t always need to be pushed or asked. Sometimes we just love trying to achieve.

HOW YOU CAN BUILD YOUR HAPPINESS

  • Positive Emotion. Look to build your positive emotions about the past, by cultivating gratitude and forgiveness; about the present, by savouring physical pleasures and mindfulness; and about the future, by building hope and optimism.
  • Try to cultivate flow through playing a musical instrument, reading a book, writing, building furniture, fixing a bike, gardening, sports training or performance.
  • Relationships. Develop strong relationships. The experiences that contribute to well-being, such as great joy, meaning, laughter, a feeling of belonging, and pride in accomplishment are amplified through relationships.
  • Meaning. This can be derived from belonging to and serving something bigger than the self. For example, connect with religion, family, science, politics, work, justice, the community, or social causes.
  • Accomplishment. People pursue achievement, competence, success and mastery for its own sake, in a variety of domains, including the workplace, sports, games and hobbies.
