THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY — AND WHY THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY — AND WHY THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

15 Jul 2025

Here’s something that could shift your entire outlook on life, it shifted mine when I first saw it a few years back!  “The map is not the territory.” It sounds simple. But the meaning is deep.

Your internal representation of the world (your “map”) is not the same as the world itself (the “territory”).

The more you realise this, the more freedom you create.

Put simply… You are not the story you’ve been told. You are not the label you’ve accepted.

Your mind doesn’t deal with the world as it really is – it deals with the world as you’ve mapped it. That map is shaped by your beliefs, memories, values, fears, emotional habits and past experiences. It’s an internal representation – not the territory itself. In other words: You’re not responding to life. You’re responding to your version of it.

IS YOUR MAP OUTDATED?

A menu is not the meal. The word ‘water’ will not quench your thirst. The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. Words and labels point toward experience… But they are not the experience itself.

You may have labelled yourself – anxious, broken, unworthy, too much, not enough — but those labels are just drawings on your map. You’re not broken – you’re just holding an outdated map.

YOU ARE THE EDITOR OF YOUR OWN REALITY

A great way to understand the map is not the territory is to imagine you are the editor-in-chief of a daily newspaper called Your Life. Each moment, millions of bits of information come your way: body language, tone of voice, the weather, traffic, the look someone gave you, the email you haven’t replied to… And just like a real editor, your brain can’t include everything. So, what does it do? It filters. It:

Deletes what feels unimportant

Distorts based on emotional states and past experiences

Generalises for speed and efficiency

And what makes the front page? Whatever your internal map says is worth reporting.

Get this – everyone else is doing the same thing. That’s why 10 people can experience the same situation and walk away with 10 different stories.

YOU ARE A THOUSAND DIFFERENT STORIES

You are a thousand different stories to other people, in other people’s newspapers – many of which you will never get to read.

Their stories about you are shaped by their maps – their filters, pain, upbringing, values and expectations. Just like yours are shaped by yours.

So given everyone is living inside their own version of reality… you can…

STOP taking things so personally.
STOP obsessing over how you’re seen.
START focusing on upgrading your own map – so that it serves you.

HOW THIS CAN WORK FOR YOU – WORKSHOP

If your current “map” tells you: “I always mess things up”; “People can’t be trusted”; “I’m not good with money”; “I’ll never lose this weight”; and “That’s just the way I am” … then that’s the reality you live in.

But it’s not ‘THE’ reality. It’s “A” reality. And because you’re the editor – you can change the narrative.

By changing what you delete, distort, and generalise – you unlock new paths. New choices. New outcomes.

Try the “Editor’s Desk” exercise. A powerful 5-step self-coaching tool to rewrite your story.

STEP 1: Identify a stuck area in your life

Pick something that frustrates you:
“I always procrastinate.”
“People don’t respect me.”
“I’m no good at relationships.”

STEP 2: Write your current internal headline

Be honest. What story are you running?

“I mess everything up, so there’s no point trying.”

STEP 3: Break it down

Deletions – What are you leaving out?
  • Moments you succeeded
  • Positive feedback you ignored
  • Growth you’ve made
  • Help that’s available

“I mess everything up” forgets the many things you’ve done right.

Distortions – Are you twisting facts?
  • “They didn’t reply = they don’t like me”
  • “Feeling nervous = I’m not capable”
  • “They disagreed = they hate me”

You’re assigning emotional meaning to things that may not be true.

Generalisations – Are you turning one event into a rule?
  • “People always ignore me”
  • “I never get it right”
  • “No one listens to me”

Look out for words like always, never, everyone, no one — they point to faulty mapping.

STEP 4: Rewrite the headline

Replace the old story with one based on truth and possibility. “I’ve made mistakes, but I’ve also succeeded. I’m learning, growing, and getting better.”

STEP 5: Read it aloud

Let the new headline settle in. Breathe it in. This is the beginning of your new edition.
