PARABLE OF THE SECOND ARROW
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH ANXIETY?
A well-being teaching that I practise a lot is the parable of the second arrow. This is easy to do. It’s so simple, yet so powerful. The teaching says there are two arrows for every event that happens to you.
The first arrow is the event itself. It’s what happens. It could be: someone was horrible to you; you had an accident; you broke up with your partner; you take a break from alcohol.
The second arrow is how you react to the first arrow.
Remember that every single thought you think comes from within you. No one else is thinking it. Just you. Whether it’s fear of missing out, anxiety, craving or grasping, the thought comes from within you.
So for example, if you are craving for something like a drink, a vape, a cake, whatever – view this as a second arrow. The more you realise that this second arrow is on its way, the better the chance you have of dealing with it, being ready for it and watching it whizz by.
In the words of stoic thinker Epictetus ‘It’s not what happens to you, but how you react that matters.’
