HOW MUCH PURE ALCOHOL DO YOU DRINK IN A YEAR?

11 Aug 2022

Just one 250ml glass of wine a day equates to over 11 litres of pure alcohol a year!

The following are transcripts from my book “WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS – THE SECRET TO ALCOHOL-FREE LIVING & WELL-BEING”, now available on Amazon, of the life changing experiences I encountered during my first year of going alcohol-free.

Aimed at the millions of drinkers around the world who are interested in taking a break from alcohol, WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS reveals the secret of how to free yourself from alcohol’s control.

When I got curious about alcohol, I started to work out how much neat or pure alcohol I was drinking.

Towards the end of my drinking days, each week I was drinking roughly: half a bottle of spirits (ABV 40%), 7 bottles of wine (ABV 12.5%) and 6 pints of beer (ABV 5%).

By doing a very quick calculation, using the amount of alcohol content called Alcohol By Volume, or ABV, printed on the side of the bottle, I concluded my PURE alcohol intake per week was: 140ml from spirits, 656ml from wine and 199ml from beer. Total 995ml – let’s call it a litre per week. That’s 52 litres or over 100 pints a year!

Who on earth would want to drink 52 litres of neat, undiluted poison each year? That’s equivalent to a whole bath of poison. Over 30 years, that added up to 1,500 litres of pure alcohol. The answer was ‘Me’, but things were about to change for good.

THE ALCOHOLOMETER

I created the Alcoholometer as a guide to calculate the amount of neat or pure alcohol I was drinking.

Set out in detail in the book, the Alcoholometer allows you to calculate your PURE alcohol intake and exposes some frightening facts. For example, if you are drinking a bottle of wine per night at 12.5% ABV you are consuming 365 bottles a year equating to 34.21 litres of neat alcohol. That’s crazy. Why the hell would you do that to your body and your loved ones? Surely you owe yourself, and them, more than that!

When put like this, it becomes easy to start to accept that drinking alcohol is a slow form of suicide. This is exactly the type of information that convinces the unconscious mind that alcohol is bad.

This is how I started to change my beliefs about alcohol.

By looking at the hard facts, the reality of what I was doing to myself became clear.

WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS is the story of how Nigel Jones, a 50-something-year-old, who had been locked into the habit of drinking alcohol for over 35 years, finally woke up and said, “I want a different life”; how he found his purpose and in doing so transformed his mind and body; how he lost 30% of his body weight and made anxiety and sleepless nights a thing of the past.
