GO SOBER THIS OCTOBER – WOULD YOU DRINK ONE LITRE OF PURE ALCOHOL?
According to medical experts, if you drank around half a pint, or 250ml, of 100% undiluted or PURE alcohol you will almost certainly die. Armed with that information, would you do that? Of course you wouldn’t… or would you?
I stopped drinking alcohol almost three years ago and without a doubt one of the most important reasons for my success was realising how much neat alcohol I was actually drinking each day. It was a real wake up call.
If you’re Going Sober this October, imagine what you will NOT be putting in your body over 31 days – this alone will make you think long and hard about the reality of drinking alcohol.
One 250ml glass of 13.5% wine a day for 31 days equals 1.05 litres of pure alcohol
One pint of 5% lager a day for 31 days equals 0.88 litres of pure alcohol
One 50ml shot of 40% brandy or whisky per night for 31 days equals 0.62 litres of pure alcohol
I created THE ALCOHOLOMETER as a guide to calculate the amount of neat, or pure alcohol, I was drinking. The Alcoholometer exposes some frightening facts. For example, if you are drinking a bottle of wine per night at 12.5% ABV you are consuming 365 bottles a year equating to 34.21 litres of neat alcohol. That’s crazy. Why the hell would you do that to your body and your loved ones? Surely you owe yourself, and them, more than that!
And beer is the same. Let’s say you drink a couple of pints after work, Monday to Thursday. On the weekend, you let your hair down and have five pints on Friday, and maybe an afternoon session watching sports on Saturday, consuming six pints. Then on Sunday, a ‘hair-of-the-dog’ pint with your lunch. That’s 20 pints, or one pint of neat alcohol. If you did that every week you would consume 52 pints of neat alcohol a year. That’s 29.5 litres. Based on 5% ABV.
When put like this, it becomes easy to start to accept that drinking alcohol is a slow form of suicide. This is exactly the type of information that convinces the unconscious mind that alcohol is bad.
This is how I changed my beliefs about alcohol.
By looking at the hard facts, the reality of what I was doing to myself became clear.
