GO SOBER THIS OCTOBER – HOW TO CHANGE YOUR BELIEFS ABOUT ALCOHOL
Beliefs are simply assumptions which we hold to be true and which may – or may not – be based on facts.
They are like tables… We build and dismantle beliefs like we would a table. The belief starts out as the table top and we use references to create the legs. The stronger the references, the stronger the legs, which creates a solid belief.
The way to both build and dismantle beliefs is through small, daily actions. These create reference points for us to gather evidence that the belief holds true.
Every day that you remain alcohol-free, you are building a firm belief that you can thrive without alcohol. You are building a new empowering belief that you no longer need it. Every day alcohol-free is a vote for the new belief.
Alternatively, to break up limiting beliefs be curious and question the facts that support these beliefs.
I now have a belief that I am a person that exercises every day and I support this belief on a daily basis by walking 9KM BY 9AM. But this does not have to mean a very long walk. The key is to complete some form of exercise every day, even if it is only for a few minutes. This will train you to believe that you are the sort of person that exercises every day. Once the belief grows, you can create a more adventurous exercise plan, safe in the knowledge that you will subconsciously want to do it because you believe that you’re someone who exercises every day.
HOW TO CHALLENGE YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS ABOUT ALCOHOL
All beliefs can be challenged. List the beliefs you have about alcohol, which you think are limiting. Take each limiting belief, for example ‘Alcohol relaxes me and reduces my anxiety’ and ask the following questions.
- Does this belief improve your life?
- Is this belief good for your health?
- Does this belief have any harmful consequences for you or others?
You will soon see the legs fall off the table and the table come crashing down.
