DRY JANUARY WISDOM: GOAL SETTING & WALL CHARTS

If you’re planning on setting some goals for 2023 this is a great tip that worked for me and is a critical part of my goal achievement process.

Call me old fashioned, but I love a Wall Chart to tick off my daily achievements, serving as a record of how far I have come on my challenge.

The Wall Chart, or one page piece of paper, fast becomes a core part of my journey. Each mark is a loaded reminder of the days I have notched up towards my end goal. My success cements the Wall Chart into my goal process.

I currently have three Wall Charts on the go! Here are a couple of examples.

ONE YEAR NO MEAT – On 1st January 2022 I set myself a daily goal of not eating meat or fish each day. 365 Days later I did it and I intend to stay vegetarian.  On Day One, I printed off an A4 calendar with the whole year on one page, so I could cross off the days as I journeyed to Day 365.

I also did this in my first and second years of alcohol-free living. You can see from the picture that this chart takes on its own meaning, its own life. Not only do I feel much healthier, but I also estimate 50 chickens, a cow, 2 pigs and quite a few fish were not killed as a result of this!

I strategically placed the Wall Chart on the fridge door – the gateway to booze and meat! Each day, the first thing I did on entering the kitchen was put a cross in the box for that day, making it a form of self-fulfilling prophecy that I had already achieved the day without alcohol or meat.

3,000 PRESS UP CHALLENGE – In November 2022 I started this challenge, part of a bigger goal of weight loss and general upper body fitness. Basically, I do 100 press up each day for 30 days.  I achieve this by doing 10 press ups before my daily tasks so I do 10 press ups before I brush my teeth, 10 after, 10 before my morning cup of tea, 10 before my lunch, 10 before my afternoon tea etc. Every day I do 100 press ups and after 30 days I achieve 3,000 press ups.

I am now in month 3 of doing this and it has become a normal routine or habit. I have noticed a huge change in my upper body strength and well-being. My goal is not to do 3,000 press ups – it is to do 10 press ups before daily activities – so it is easily achievable and not in the least bit daunting.

It all sounds so simple, but do not underestimate the power of one of these Wall Charts and goal success.

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE…

Print off a Wall Chart. There are loads online. Stick it on your fridge door and mark off each day as you progress through the first week, month and year of your challenge.
