ARE YOU WEARING THE RIGHT GLASSES?

CONSULT YOUR INNER OPTICIAN

Every day, we wake up and see the world through a unique pair of glasses or lenses – our mental filters, our beliefs, our habits. But here’s the real question: Are your glasses helping you… or hurting you?

Some of us are unknowingly wearing old, scratched, or mis-prescribed lenses that distort the way we see ourselves and our lives. Maybe you’re wearing the glasses that say “Drinking helps me relax” or “Smoking keeps me calm.” Maybe you’ve had the glasses on for so long that you’ve forgotten they’re even there: “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll start tomorrow,” or “This job is fine, really.”

These glasses shape your reality. But they’re not the reality. As the NLP principle says, The map is not the territory.” This simply means your internal representation of the world (your map) is not the same as the world itself (the territory). And your glasses are to blame.

Some of these glasses were passed down to you. Others were put on in moments of stress, trauma, or conditioning. And some you chose because they made things feel easier—at least for a while.

But not all prescriptions are meant to be lifelong.

THE INNER OPTICIAN: A SELF-WORKSHOP

Here’s a short reflective exercise to help you check your current ‘vision’ and reframe your reality.

Step 1: Spot the Specs
Ask yourself:

What glasses am I wearing that no longer serve me?

Which beliefs, habits, or perspectives feel outdated, unhelpful, or even harmful?

Which lenses have been clouding my health, happiness, or growth?

Examples: “Alcohol helps me socialise,” “I need a vape to take the edge off,” “I’ll never be confident enough” and “Comfort zones are safer than change.”

Step 2: Choose the Glasses to Take Off

Make a short list of glasses you’d no longer like to wear. Ask yourself, which pair would make the biggest difference if you changed them now? Which habit or belief is draining your energy?

Step 3: Take the Glasses Off
You don’t have to fight a bad habit. Just take off the old glasses. Then ask:

What was I trying to get from this habit or belief?

Can I get that same benefit in a healthier, more empowering way.

Old Glasses: “Drinking relaxes me.” New View: “Walking, meditating, or reading relaxes me even more.”

Old Glasses: “I’ll never be enough”. New View: “I’m learning and growing—I am enough for where I am now.”

Many beliefs are just filters we’ve accepted without question. But you have the power to question them – like a good scout searching for facts, not just sticking to a script.

  • Is this belief still true for me?
  • Is it good for my health?
  • Is it helping those around me?

If the answer is no for any of these… it’s time for new glasses.

You were never broken. Maybe you’ve just been wearing the wrong glasses. Take them off. Try something new. And watch how different your life begins to look.
