2,000 DAYS ALCOHOL-FREE
WHAT 2,000 ALCOHOL-FREE DAYS TAUGHT ME
On 31 May, I reach 2,000 alcohol-free days. The day I decided to stop drinking, which is now over five and a half years ago, was the day I changed my life in an instant.
That one decision of “I am not going to drink today” is something I still make on a daily basis. It became better sleep, calmer mornings, clearer thinking, more energy, less anxiety, lost weight, thousands of kilometres walked, books written, new qualifications achieved, and a whole new purpose built.
The Supermarket Moment
Just the other day, I was buying some alcohol-free drinks when the self-checkout alarm went off and the assistant came over. Apparently, even alcohol-free drinks still need age approval because they can be seen, according to the assistant, as a potential gateway to alcohol. I laughed and said to him: “That’s funny – I’ve gone the other way. I started with alcohol and worked my way to zero 🙂”
It made me think afterwards how differently people still view alcohol-free living. Some see alcohol-free products as a gateway into drinking. For me, they were part of the way out.
A Few Things I’ve Learned in 2,000 Days
Here are just a few of the many many things I have learned on this journey.
1. Facing Things Instead Of Escaping Them
For years I thought alcohol helped me cope with life. Eventually I realised it was stopping me from fully living it.
Without the escape route, I had to meet myself properly. My thoughts. My habits. My fears. My beliefs. That is where the real work started.
When you stop running away from yourself – which alcohol allows you to do for a short time – you start facing things instead. You deal with them. You process them. You move through them. That, for me, is one of the biggest differences between drinking and alcohol-free living.
2. Alcohol Promises What Sobriety Delivers
Alcohol promises short-term confidence, calm, connection, stress relief and happiness, but never really delivers. Alcohol led to poor sleep, heightened anxiety, low mood, emotional reactivity and disconnection.
Alcohol-free living, however, delivers the things alcohol promises. Better sleep. Greater calm. Clearer thinking. More energy. Stronger relationships. More self-esteem. More presence. More of the real, authentic you. Physically, mentally and spiritually, everything improves.
3. Small Habits Compound
Small daily habits shape your future far more than dramatic one-off moments. The future version of you is hidden in the routines you repeat daily.
For me, three things became non-negotiable each day from Day One:
- I don’t drink alcohol
- I meditate for 10–15 minutes each day
- I go for a long walk every day
Those habits created what I call the domino effect. One positive action pushes over the next. Better sleep leads to more energy. More energy leads to better choices. Better choices improve confidence, health, mindset and purpose.
4. Believe You Are Already At Your Destination
One of the biggest mindset shifts I made on Day One was this: I stopped thinking of alcohol-free living as a distant destination.
I wasn’t standing at the bottom of a mountain, looking up at a flag that said “alcohol-free” on Day 30, Day 90 or Day 365.
The moment I made the decision to stop drinking, I was already alcohol-free. I was already living it. That changed everything.
I stopped trying to become a non-drinker and started living as one. I took on the values, beliefs and behaviours of someone who no longer drinks.
Of course, the old voice still pops up. It says: “Go on, have one. You deserve it.” That is the old version of you trying to pull you back. But the new version of you is already alcohol-free. That is the voice to listen to.
Listen to the new version and you move forward. Listen to the old version and, well, we all know where that leads.
For me, that is the secret to alcohol-free living. You are not trying to get there. You are there. Now you live from that place.
I Wrote The Book I Wish I’d Had On Day One
The drinking version of me and the alcohol-free version of me are very different people. One was tired, anxious and reactive. The other is calmer, fitter, more present, and more in control of the future.
Of course, they are both me. But I genuinely believe going alcohol-free allowed me to become the best version of myself. I didn’t just stop drinking, I changed the operating system of my life.
A huge part of my journey became my book, Walking Back To Happiness: The Secret To Alcohol-Free Living & Well-being. The book became the scaffolding I put around the house that is my body and mind. It gave me a structure to repair, rebuild and strengthen myself – physically, mentally and spiritually.
That house has many rooms: physical health, mental well-being, behaviour, habits, values, beliefs, purpose and goals. Alcohol-free living gave me the chance to refurbish the old rooms and build new ones.
The book contains 70 exercises, reflections and workshops designed to guide people through the first 365 days alcohol-free – from Day One to Week One, Month One, 90 Days, six months and beyond.
It has now helped thousands of people stop drinking, put their own scaffolding in place, and start rebuilding their own house too.
Because becoming alcohol-free isn’t just about removing alcohol. It’s about creating the structure, strength and self-belief to build a new version of yourself who no longer wants or needs it.
