THE BEST PRESENT THIS CHRISTMAS IS TO BE PRESENT
This is my third Alcohol-Free Christmas and another one where I will remember everything!
The ‘best’ present, by far, I ever gave myself for Christmas was ‘to be more present’ and by doing this I became calmer, more thoughtful, more caring, less anxious, better connected and generally happier.
Taking a break from alcohol is the fast lane to being more present. To put it very simply when you drink you are not present. I was, most of the time, somewhere else. Thinking about the past or the future but rarely in the present moment, or the now. Alcohol does this to you. When you drink, you leave the now and go somewhere else. That’s pretty much the plan. You drink to relax, have fun, escape – well, you think you do. The reality is it keeps you locked up in a world of bad sleep, anxiety, and numerous poor health choices.
By taking alcohol out of my diet and learning the powerful life skill of mindfulness, I very quickly changed my life. Mindfulness is like a nuclear weapon in the arsenal I used to change my beliefs and my story on the path towards a much happier life.
The road to Damascus – ‘I have seen the light’ – moment came when I was walking along a country lane on one of my early morning 9KM BY 9AM walks. I was playing around with the words of Master Oogway from the movie Kung Fu Panda: ‘The past is history; the future is a mystery and today is a gift and that is why we call it the present.’ I love that line. But the words became so real when I looked back down the road I had just come from (the past) and forward to where I was potentially going (the future) and where I was (the now). Eureka! I understand it. It is my body that is always in the now. It can’t be in the past or the future. So, it is only my mind that wanders and takes me backwards or forwards. And I can control this through mindfulness and meditation.
Not only have I become happier and content by living as much as possible in the present, but I have also doubled the amount of time I have on this planet. But how?
Studies show we spend up to 50% of our time either worrying about the past or anxious about something that has not yet happened! Through meditation and mindfulness practices, I learnt how to control my thoughts and live more in the now – not the past or the future. By doing this, I effectively save 50% of my time, thereby doubling the amount of time I have!
Being more present means I focus on what’s happening now. My mind is not wandering to the past or the future. It’s reunited with my body, here in the present – the only place where things happen.
My book Walking Back To Happiness The Secret To Alcohol-free Living & Well-being shows you how I trained myself to be more present and how you can to. It’s helped hundreds of people get through the first few days, weeks and months on the journey of alcohol-free living.
Give yourself the present you deserve. Take a break from alcohol. You might like it! In fact I know you will.
