900 DAYS ALCOHOL-FREE
A few days ago, I journeyed past the 900 Day alcohol-free marker on the road called the rest of my life.
Today I feel as if alcohol is now a lifetime away, something I used to do in a previous life. I have moved myself into a new identity of someone who is completely indifferent to alcohol. Alcohol is no longer part of me and deciding to finally stop drinking almost 2.5 years ago has been so worth it.
On Day One, a major part of my ‘new’ values was the fact that I’d stopped drinking. This was now a major part of who I was. ‘I’ve stopped drinking. I used to drink but I don’t drink anymore.’ This was part of my new identity – it defined me. Every day I was telling myself, ‘I have stopped drinking. I’m no longer a drinker and I am on a journey to alcohol freedom.’
I was, effectively, a work in progress. I was not yet a 100% non-drinker. What was still defining me was the fact that I had stopped. I was in between being a drinker and a fully-fledged non-drinker.
In the early days, the longer I went into the journey the greater the fear became of going back to where I had come from. I felt I had more to lose, simply because of all the effort that I had put into stopping drinking alcohol. If I succumbed, all the days that I had accumulated would have been a waste of time!
But there came a point when I woke up and saw clearly for the first time. This is a wonderful experience. The best experience ever. This started to happen for me after around 200 days. The fact that I don’t drink became a part of me. Any fear of going back to drinking left me. It’s not something I’m actively doing and it’s not something I think about any more. I just don’t drink. It’s no longer on my agenda.
The anxiety, hangovers, not remembering what I said or did the night before, the sleepless nights, sweats, and the endless list of the negative effects of alcohol on my well-being, are no longer my problem.
There are so many changes for the good that stand out, including massively improved health, better diet, being more present, minimal anxiety, a good night’s sleep every night, self-respect, respect for others, responding not reacting. Above all I believe I am happy.
Finding happiness in the way I live my life IS the secret to alcohol-free living and well-being.
Happiness is truly just a mindset. It resides all around us and inside all of us. You just have to let it in.
